I too struggle with the āI deserve a rest when I get home from workā thing. I start at 6:30 (up at 5am š - just as well I love my job!) and finish at 2:30. Sitting with a cup of Afternoon Tea when I get home is my reward.
But if I pick up my phone and start doomscrolling, my tea goes cold, and I lose two hours.
Iām now purposely either not looking at my phone, or just catching up with emails & such. Staying away from social media allows me to put the phone down after twenty minutes or so, and then either think about my writing, do some cross-stitch, or write here on Substack.
Itās small changes. But until youāve thought about why you do something & then how to change that if youāre not happy, you can never break out of the cycle.
Thanks for reading and commenting, Maggie! Itās so easy to fall into these little traps. I feel such a sense of achievement when I recognise and avoid them. Recently Iāve taken social media off my phone (substack excluded) so I can only view on my desktop. Thatās definitely lessened the appeal of my phone. All the best!
This was great timing and a good reminder to dig a a little deeper with root cause before action! So, thank you ā¤ļø Please refer to Princess and the Frog's āDig a Little Deeperā for my inner sound to that phrase right now.
Also, in answer to Emma's question I think duck-diving is a fabulous verb for duck duck go. š
Thanks for bringing us into your mind a bit especially with the comic asides.
I love your beautiful and inspiring piece. On a trivial note, i loved the hyperbole and a half ref! What a throwback! Also high five for using duck duck go. Im trying to think of the verb for doing a duck duck go search ... quacking? Or duck-diving?
Haha Iām so glad you enjoyed the throwback ā my brain suddenly remembered āALL THE THINGSā and I got distracted for a good hour rereading her comics. Thanks for reading, Emma!
Thank you for this!

P.S. I like both options but am partial to duck-dive. Or should we just shout āgooseā?
